Sometimes I think about the problems and effects that colonialism has caused throughout the world. Is it good or bad? “Colonialism has always had a bad reputation” (1). I guess essentially, for colonized people, that can't be a good thing. The worldwide race for colonies, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, had enormous negative effects on the economic, social, and political structures of non-industrialized indigenous populations. The idea of colonialism is to take resources from a country to use them for the benefit of the colonizing country. “Colonialism is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory and people outside its borders, often to facilitate economic domination over their resources, labor and markets. The term also refers to a set of beliefs used to legitimize or promote this system, in particular the belief that the customs of the colonizer are superior to those of the colonized.”(2). Some might argue that they did it for religious reasons: to spread the Gospel. But in reality it comes from the ability to react within Europe. It is a competition in terms of resources, military strength, political programs, at a time when Europe has begun its era of success. One thing is certain, all colonized countries go through a period of downfall after freedom. But if we look at today's world, some interesting developments emerge. While some countries have used what they learned from their colonizers, namely technological progress, to their advantage, others even manage to overcome the dictatorship of the past. On the other hand, there are countries that have struggled, or are still struggling, in civil wars, economic turmoil, and various other problems. What is often used as a scapegoat for the currency of these countries... middle of paper... high literacy rate, with strong leaders: doctors, lawyers, bankers, economists, artists, etc. Japan also established telephone lines and roads; upgraded rail systems. “The major secular concern invariably concerns the extent to which Japanese colonizers contributed to and hindered Taiwan's development.”(3) Although Japan invested in all of these infrastructure developments for its own intentional presence on the island. The people of Taiwan were able to use these factors to their advantage. I think that perhaps, before blaming people's misfortunes on past events that we cannot change, we should ask ourselves what we can do to change our situation TODAY. Every person/country in this world has its own unique background. Some are luckier than others over the years/centuries, but it is our current actions that set us apart.
