Topic > Technology in the Classroom - 1293

As we move forward into the 21st century, our society is rapidly becoming more and more integrated with technology. The creation of new laptops and tablets and easy access to new and improved phones have also pushed younger generations to engage in these advancements. The rapid and widespread implementation of these technological advances has shaped the new way we conduct our daily lives, as well as the way knowledge is processed and taught in our classrooms. Today's technology offers teachers, as well as students, teaching and learning opportunities that were previously impossible. Technology is used as a tool to promote human learning, not only calculators, but also smart boards, tablets (iPads), video cameras, portable digital assistants and, of course, computers. They can be used as tools to create educational materials or as presentation devices to deliver information in ways never possible before. While technology can be useful in facilitating communication and industrial development, its correct use in classrooms can be crucial for 21st century students. Technology in the classroom can start at an early age, even in early childhood classrooms. Research conducted by Clements and Sarama (2003) found that words spoken per minute by preschoolers were twice as high on the computer than on any other activity, including blocks, drawing, playdough, or other games (Hertzog and Klein 25 ). Nowadays we can see young students starting to create PowerPoint presentations at a young age, some as young as six years old, which just prepares them for the real world. These young students are quickly learning skills that will allow them to succeed more quickly than in classrooms that do not include technology.
