Getting a college degree helps you ensure that you are qualified for the job you want. For example, Andrew Delbanco writes in his article that a bachelor's degree is a minimum qualification for entry into the skilled labor market (Delbanco 506). David Leonhardt, a journalist for the New York Times, also wrote that, according to an analysis of Department of Labor statistics (Leonhardt), the wage gap between college graduates and everyone else is higher than ever. Additionally, many adults believe that college is very important. An example of this is the cartoon on the right which helps illustrate the importance of a college education using comedic dialogue. Delbanco also writes about the fact that a college education helps increase job pay. He writes that graduates earn more (Delbanco 506). He also writes that a college education will help turn Americans into educated citizens and can help citizens contribute to society. He talks about this when he writes “College education provides an educated citizenry…Graduates should be able to understand the ideas and practices of democratic education” (Delbanco 507).
