Human resource management (HRM) can be defined and simplified in various ways. One definition is that human resource management means “getting the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right places” (Collins, 2001). People theory is a theory of human resource management that includes recruitment and selection, two major topics in the human resource management function that concern people and their path to a job for them. This essay will cover and discuss these two topics, recruitment and selection and their importance to the HRM function. Recruitment Job advertisements are a form of recruitment and can be carried out in different ways, for example via the Internet, newspapers, job centres, etc. (Foot and Hook, 2008). According to Armstrong, M., (2009). The goal is to attract many people with the competence for the vacancy at the lowest cost, also to motivate candidates to take action, to sustain interest in the organization's vacancy and to enable the company to compete with other organizations of the more attractive candidates. Google, a web-based search engine, named the world's most attractive employer in 2013 by 200,000 students or potential candidates (Universum, 2013), uses Job advertising relatively limited to its corporate website (Google, 2013), which shows the importance of maintaining continuous interest among possible candidates as it creates a platform and helps strengthen the chances of finding a suitable candidate for the vacancy (Armstrong, 2009). Google is also known to offer attractive benefits such as free legal assistance, travel insurance, on-site doctors, etc., making candidates apply attractive and further widening the pool of potential candidates, due to their accurate matches with the potential. .....middle of paper......2013.
