Teen girls receive approximately 40 hours of media exposure each week. This is the majority of time teens spend on an activity other than school and sleeping. Teenage girls are greatly influenced by the ideal body image they see on screen. Girls have difficulty trying to achieve an ideal body image and may go on a diet or develop eating disorders to gain control of their weight and body figure. When girls fail to do this, they can become depressed and have lower self-esteem. However, most model and celebrity bodies are difficult for the average person to obtain. In fact, it's so difficult that many celebrities have their bodies Photoshopped to become slimmer and look more beautiful. A research team from Temple University conducted a study in which they created a website called My Pop Studio. On the interactive website, teenage girls were asked to give themselves a makeover using makeup, different hairstyles and physical attributes. The result was that most girls wanted to look thinner, whiter and blonder, just like a Barbie doll. This is because the media has created an ideal image of what a girl should be like. Teenage girls associate their success and popularity with body weight and beauty. In the public eye, tall, thin models and celebrities are highly valued while overweight actresses and models are ridiculed. Media includes forms of online communication such as social media. One that is very popular among teenage girls is Tumblr. It is a microblogging platform that allows users to publish multimedia content on a short-form blog. There's a group of people on Tumblr called "depressed wannabes." They post black and white photos with a quote of misunderstood turmoil. This... middle of paper...... and seeing the photos of the models reduced the negative effect of the media. At home, mothers need to talk more with their daughters about body image. When mothers exercise obsessively, diet constantly, or make derogatory comments about their appearance, it affects their daughter because mothers are the most influential role models for most girls. Fathers also need to be more cautious in how they respond to media images of sexy, thin women. There have been campaigns started by companies about true beauty that try to teach girls that they should appreciate who they are. The campaigns try to reject the ideal body image and explain that a certain beauty in the media is unattainable. The Dove company has created a great campaign on True Beauty.
