George Liddell was the dean of Christ Church and knew Carroll very well. On a July afternoon in 1856 he took the three sisters to the Thames and told them the story. The main character is named after Alice Liddell, who asked Carroll to write the story, which led to today's Alice in Wonderland. Carroll's childhood is a major reason why Alice in Wonderland is the story that it is. Although Carroll's parents loved and raised him, he still had eleven siblings, resulting in a somewhat neglectful (Victorian) childhood. Carroll helped entertain his brothers by telling stories that most likely influenced this story.
