Why did Othello get married? Why Othello got married is a complex question, the obvious answer would be that he loves Desdemona, but why he loves her and why his love turns to hate so quickly in Act III scene 3 requires a lot of thought and consideration. Othello likes people to be simple and open because he himself is like that, he has grown to become his image, he is only on the surface, he hides nothing because that is his image, having only one side, the military one. So Desdemona also seems very open to him, he likes her because he thinks she is like him but when he discovers that perhaps she is hiding something from him then he stops loving her. At the same time Othello needs a wife to complete his image, she is proof that he is a successful and Christian general and he can show her as such. Othello loves or thinks he loves Desdemona for many reasons, not least because he thinks she is like him. He thinks it will be a good relationship because in his eyes she seems to be just like a soldier, so he likes her so much that he attracted her while telling her the stories of his battles as seen in Act I scene 3: "He loved me for the dangers I have passed." He speaks to her as he speaks to a soldier using images of war and power: "May the winds blow until death awakens, and let the industrious boat climb the hills of the seas." Since she comes with him to war, he becomes even more in his mind one of his soldiers so much so that upon his return to Cyprus he greets her with: "O my beautiful warrior". Othello cannot stand anyone who is different from him, who he cannot understand, so because he sees so much of himself in Desdemona he loves her. She is his "hard, bright surface" because she reflects his image when he looks at her. She's commanding, intelligent, and confident, which he sees as her best qualities. She demonstrates how commanding and intelligent she is when she first responds to her father in Act I scene 3: To thee am I bound for life and education; My life and education teach me how to respect you.
