The importance of family and friends is paramount for mentally ill patients. This is especially true for low-income women (Ichiro Kawachi, Lisa F. Berkman, 2001). Promoting more counseling and support groups can increase the quality of mental health because individuals are able to talk about their problems and express themselves without any restrictions. In-home counseling for families with children under the age of five can help train parents to become more effective parents by improving their interaction with their children to boost their children's mental health and improving family-work balance. Older adults also benefit from social interaction. Older adults are at risk for many mental illnesses due to social isolation, the death of a family member, and the loss of certain rights such as the right to drive.
