Topic > Movie Review: The Breakfast Club - 1069

Before the film was released in theaters, all of the main characters were either adults or young children, making it rare for teenagers to be the center of attention. The Breakfast Club is based on five high school kids, who are all different but slowly come together over the course of the film. Characters accomplish things; overcome personal boundaries and all this is done by coming together. At the beginning of the production, when their parents drop them off in front of the school there is Claire, whose father apologizes because he couldn't get her out of prison, and Andrew who gets yelled at for being in that particular position. to Bender casually walking to school alone; however, each having a different life, they all suffer the same torture and detention. As the film progresses and the inmates realize that they can be friends, they encounter a problem. They all come from different cliques and for the most part none of them communicated during school. In one particular scene, there is a conversation that states, “Oh, be honest, Andy. If Brain came to you in the hallway on Monday, what would you do? I mean, imagine you're there with all the sports. I know exactly what you would do: you would say goodbye to him and when he left you would tear him to pieces so your friends wouldn't think you really liked him! (Hughes 1985). The one who brought up that particular quote was Claire and she makes a good point that no matter how close the kids got during their time in prison, it would be difficult for them if they wanted to remain friends in real high school..
