Include any challenges to consistently employing these values when making personal and organizational decisions. Integrity Jeff grew up as a child and was mentored in the Air Force that, first and foremost, you have to do the right thing, not the popular thing. Jeff has seen on more than one occasion in AF where an individual has intentionally spent money incorrectly, intentionally lied about information just to get things done or to hide wrongdoing, or not come forward to address inappropriate behavior. Jeff's integrity was tested on one occasion when someone in a formal school setting began making jokes of a sexual nature. Not once did the instructor respond to the comments and later attempted to dismiss the class. While Jeff was not personally offended by the comments, his integrity in doing the right thing led him to address the students and instructor before anyone could walk away. Jeff explained that the comments were inappropriate for that environment and that the instructor set a poor example in allowing it to continue. Jeff placed integrity at the top of the list because he believes that having integrity will lead to trust and loyalty which will ultimately impact the effectiveness of the organization. The challenge with always showing integrity is that some people may resent what you do or say. However, while making the right decision or speaking up isn't always the easiest decision, in most cases subordinates and colleagues will respect you for doing the right thing in the long run, as Jeff discovered. He didn't go to school to seek any type of award, but after talking about the comments, he didn't feel like he would have a chance since a large portion of who receives awards are peer review points. On graduation night, Jeff was honored as a Distinguished Graduate based on leadership points earned by his peers. Respect Jeff had moments early in his military career where he felt he was not personally respected nor did he feel his ideas were respected. Jeff's motivation and desire to do a good job didn't exist. Based on Jeff's early experiences, he decided that he would not be one of those individuals who did not appreciate and respect everyone's ideas and suggestions just because of their rank or other factors such as race, color, religion, national origin, or sex..
